We’re back taking agility classes! We couldn’t be happier. The teacher this time is Gwyn and she is amazing. Gwyn and her Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Gus have been invited to the AKC Agility Invitationals in Orlando, Florida this December! Only the top 5 dogs of each breed are accepted into the Invitationals. We have learned so much in the three classes we have completed. Here are a couple of videos made of Wrigley last night! Agility
Agility, it’s not just for Dogs
I am a little embarrassed that ‘The Turtle” is better at agility than I am. Guess I need to work harder! and remember, there is no obstacle you can’t get around if you’re willing to run, jump, tunnel or weave! Wrigley Enjoy my blog? Home Alone
We have been working with Wrigley to let him not be crated while we are not home. A few months ago we would not have left him out of his crate unsupervised.
Best Breed for Agility
During my time on the agility track, I’ve noticed a trend. All those people who are standing around are always talking about the same thing: being on the lookout for the new “best” breed to run agility. If you’ve ever considered running werewolves, today I’d like to offer some insider’s advice about this temperamental but highly-talented species.
Learn it Slow – Get it Right
The choice to take the Agility Foundations class was such a good decision for us. I love the work and I love learning at a slow pace and getting it right. My handlers are happy because they like an instructor that is able to explain things or try different approaches that fit an individual dog.
Place Matters
You see in my dog brain, I do not always make the leap from sit at the door to sit in the park (or anywhere else).
One step forward and Two Steps back
Sometimes in training, as in life, stepping back is the quickest way to move forward. So, it is with my Agility Training.
It is a Balancing Act
We are almost through with our beginning agility class and I’ve learned a lot of new things. Last night we spent some time working on the dog walk, jumps, the tunnel and pause table.
Targeting the Dog Walk
I spent a lot of time last week targeting. It is a fun and simple game. Basically, it’s a paper plate, or Tupperware lid with a treat on it. It started by having the target always in my sight, but we have now progressed to around corners or down the hall.
