I am getting a new brother! He’s 7 months old and coming to us from Marshall Kentucky. He was found running as a stray and the good folks at Dalmatian Rescue of Southwest Virginia are taking him in!

Baby bro Marshall

No doubt you’ll be reading more about Marshall in the days and weeks ahead (he hopefully arrives this weekend). However, I want to talk with you about spaying and neutering your pets.

According to the ASPCA’s website:  Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats).

The Humane Society of the United States estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. At this time, there is no central data reporting agency for animal shelters, so these numbers are estimates.

The average dog can have two litters of puppies each year; while the average cat can have up to 5 litters each year. That can equal a lot of unwanted cats or dogs! Besides, a benefit of spaying or neutering is improved health for both cats and dogs. Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors. (via the American Humane Association)

I am neutered and I don’t miss a thing!

and remember, there is no obstacle you can’t get around if you’re willing to run, jump, tunnel or weave!
